How Do I Know If a Digital Marketing Company Is Legit?

September 6, 2026·6 min read

Verification, Not Vibes

"They seemed professional on the call" is not a verification process - it's a feeling, and feelings are exactly what skilled sales scripts are designed to produce. Here's an actual step-by-step check you can run in under 30 minutes before signing anything.

Step 1: Confirm the Business Actually Exists

  • Search your state's Secretary of State business registry for the company's legal name - confirm it's actually registered and in good standing.
  • Check how long their domain has been registered using a free Whois lookup tool. A domain registered a few weeks ago paired with claims of "10 years of experience" is a mismatch worth asking about directly.
  • Look for a real physical address, not just a PO box or a coworking space listed with no suite number.

Step 2: Verify the People

  • Search the names of whoever you're talking to on LinkedIn. Do their work histories match what they're claiming on the call?
  • Check if the "team" shown on their website has real, findable people behind it, or if the photos look like stock images (a reverse image search takes seconds).

Step 3: Read Reviews Like Evidence, Not a Star Rating

  • Don't stop at the star average - read at least 10-15 actual reviews, including the negative ones.
  • Look specifically for patterns: multiple reviews describing the same problem (unresponsive after signing, results never materialized, wouldn't let them cancel) are far more telling than one angry outlier.
  • Search "[company name] complaints" and "[company name] reviews reddit" - places without a direct incentive to look good. Cross-check against the full list of red flags to watch for while you read.

Step 4: Ask for Checkable Proof, Not Just Screenshots

  • Request a live reference call with a current client, ideally in a similar industry.
  • Ask to see an actual client's Google Business Profile or website they manage (with permission) rather than just a results screenshot that could be edited.

Step 5: Check the Contract for Ownership and Exit Terms

  • Confirm in writing that you retain ownership of your website, domain, Google Business Profile, and ad accounts.
  • Confirm what happens to your content, campaigns, and historical data if you cancel.
  • A legitimate company puts this in writing without hesitation. Reluctance here is itself a signal.

Step 6: Start Small Before Going All-In

Even after verification, it's reasonable to start with a shorter initial engagement or a month-to-month term before committing to a long contract - a legitimate company with confidence in its results won't need to lock you in to keep you.
